FACTS & CURIOSITIES ABOUT THE REGION

The human presence in the region dates back about 12 thousand years, started by people who took shelter in the caves and grottos of the region and left some records of their passage through cave paintings. Indigenous tribes, descendants of slaves and Europeans who trod these paths in search of the riches of Minas Gerais also made their home here.

The region is considered an important river cradle, contributing to the São Francisco and Rio Doce basins.
